The "Ebony Roots: Bi-Centenary Symposium" marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire, March 25th, 1807. The event serves as a monument to this important international anniversary and will attempt to draw attention to histories of Trans Atlantic Slavery and Abolitionism in Canada and other contexts. It will also include discussions of the relevance of Black/African Diaspora Studies in general and within the Canadian context specifically. The event will feature scholars, academics, authors and artists whose work engages with issues of relevance to these themes.
A central aim is to organize a forum in which the broader public that McGill University serves will be welcomed into academic and relevant social discussions which intersect with histories of slavery and black settlement and populations in Canada and the west. The event welcomes students, academics and the broader public to McGill.
Entrance is free.
